It is 2010.
Numerically speaking, the number ten is one of four “perfect numbers” (3,7,10,12). The number ten is the start of a new order of numbers in double digits as compared to the previous single digit numbers. Numerologists, people who make entire careers out of studying numbers, tell us the mere presence of “ten” signifies that the previous representation of numbers that went before is now complete, they served their purpose. Thus, could it be that one hidden implication of the number ten or, 2010, speaks of an ensuing divine order of things yet ahead….do I have your interest as you think about your new year?
Biblically speaking, the number ten has some interesting facts related to it. In Genesis we find a listing of ten generations, from Adam to Noah. Noah is the tenth generation of patriarch listed. Noah’s generational distinctives are that of righteousness and promise and deliverance. Realized deliverance and accompanying promises from God always follow a life of righteousness. A partial list of scriptural references to the number ten include: ten commandments (ways to live), a tenth of one’s financial pledge to God (ways to give), the ten “I Am” statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John (Who God truly is) and, the Spirit of God fell upon the disciples ten days after the ascension of Jesus. It was interesting to me that Paul identifies ten challenges that cannot separate a person from God’s love, “I am persuaded that, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers; nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature." (Ro. 8. 38,39).
I offer one final “squared” reference to the number ten before I close. Jesus said in John 10.10, “The enemy comes to steal and kill and destroy but I have come that you would have life and have it abundantly.” Could it be that one interpretation of John 10.10 is that those who read this need to know that 2009 will not come back…your disappointments will not come back and either will your heartaches and even success! Could it be that God wants for us live a life full in 2010 that is altogether radically new?!
Your and my attempts to score a “ten”, to reach perfection, in God’s eyes will always fall short. I also add, if you want to ensure yourself of certain failure try attempting anything on your own. An old Chinese proverb says “Not ONE of us is as smart as ALL of us.” Not one of us attain divine perfection on our own. Therefore, do 2010 with others..lots of others… and you will be surprised at the potential doors of opportunity that will be opened to you.
